Underwater Drone Race Intensifies As US Tests Huge ‘Manta Ray’ That Can Operate With Refuelling

General

The US DARPA conducted the first full-scale sea test of an advanced underwater drone capable of hibernating on the seabed. The ‘Manta Ray’ prototype, produced by aviation giant Northrop Grumman, is part of a US Navy project. The new uncrewed underwater vehicle (UUV) is aimed at creating a new class of underwater drones for extended missions. One photograph of the Manta Ray showed it sitting adjacent to a support boat, underscoring just how large this drone actually is. The UUV is designed to move through the ocean “for very long periods of time” without supervision or the need to refuel.
