Ukrainian mine-hunting ships outbound from UK naval base

General

Two Ukrainian warships depart from the naval base in Portsmouth, UK, outbound to sea. They are temporarily based in the UK until they can be allowed passage into the Black Sea, and have been participating in training with other forces. Chernihiv (M310) was formally named HMS Grimsby while in service with the Royal Navy, while Cherkasy (M311) was known as HMS Shoreham. Both are Sandown-class mine-countermeasure vessels, and were donated to Ukraine in 2023. They are temporarily homeported at HMNB Portsmouth but have largely been operating from Scotland. The minehunters were not able to enter Ukraine via the Black Sea due to the conditions of the ‘Montreux Convention’, prevening warships and other military watercraft from passing through the Bosporus Strait during times of conflict.
