Since its invention, the tank has generated a certain amount of controversy. Originally designed to cross no-man’s land, protected from withering machine gun and rifle fire, the tank has evolved into something of a centerpiece for the modern military. The firepower, speed and protection of these vehicles, and how many each nation operates, have become yardsticks by which militaries are measured.
