“Fella” is the more polite term for the aircraft commonly referred to as the BUFF ;)—Military aircraft development is a fast-moving process in which models come and go in the blink of an eye. Few of them have become aircraft royalty, like the B-17 Flying Fortress or the MiG-15. But only one of them is nearing a century of service: the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress.The 390,000-pound long-range heavy jet bomber began as an intercontinental, high-altitude nuclear bomber. But its operational capabilities have been adapted throughout the years to meet the ever-changing defense requirements.The B-52 has been in service for 6 decades and is now projected to be around until 2050.
