Poland has initiated the construction of the Eastern Shield fortification system along its borders with Russia and Belarus, a move announced by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. This strategic program aims to enhance national security amid growing regional tensions. With an investment of PLN 10 billion (approximately $2.55 billion), Poland is set to create a robust network of fortifications and barriers to protect its sovereignty. The program includes the acquisition of heavy engineering equipment valued at PLN 600 million to bolster the capabilities of military engineers. Initial tests of the fortification elements have already taken place, ensuring their effectiveness. Following the construction of a significant fence in 2022 to deter illegal crossings, the Eastern Shield represents Poland’s commitment to comprehensive border security. By 2028, this initiative will significantly strengthen the country’s defenses against potential threats from the east, highlighting the importance of proactive measures in a complex geopolitical environment.
