President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has ordered military commanders to send reinforcements to help Ukrainian troops defending the besieged eastern city of Bakhmut. Ukrainian authorities say that only a few thousand of the original 70,000 people living in Bakhmut remain. The battle for the eastern city is now the longest and bloodiest of the year-long war. Russia says seizing Bakhmut would be an important step toward capturing the industrial Donbas region.
