Ohio is a class of American strategic nuclear submarines. The family is made up of 18 boats, of which 14 are ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) and another 4 are cruise missile submarines (SSGN).With a total displacement of 18,750 tons, Ohio is the largest submarine built in the United States. They are significantly inferior in this indicator to the Soviet “Typhoon” submarines, but they hold the record for arsenal: 24 Trident II ballistic missiles or 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles.Deliveries were carried out from 1986 to 1997. Ohio-class submarines are the only nuclear missile carriers in the US NAVY and are considered the most powerful element of the nuclear triad. According to various estimates, about 60% of the deployed American nuclear arsenal is located on 14 boats. According to preliminary plans, the submarines will remain in service for about 20 more years and, from the beginning of the 2030s, they will gradually begin to be replaced by boats of a new generation – the Columbia class.
