On February 18, 1944, Royal Air Force pilots were unexpectedly woken up early in the morning and rushed to a briefing room. Minutes later, the men raced to the airfield, jumped into their Mosquitoes, and took off in the middle of a thick mist and rain.

Visibility was poor due to the weather conditions, but the pilots eventually got to the French coast and sighted the Nazi-held Amiens prison.

The secret operation consisted of bombing the camp in one run, and it was a matter of life and death as the bombs had to be dropped with exact precision to reduce friendly casualties to the minimum.

Once the first bomb was released, French Resistance fighters hidden nearby began storming the prison to extract essential Resistance and political prisoners.

A massive escape operation had just begun…
