The Ukrainian war demonstrated once again that artillery is not obsolete.The US Department of Defense announced a new military aid package for Ukraine on January 6, 2023, and for the first time, the US will provide the Ukrainian army with 18 M109A6 Paladin 155mm tracked self-propelled howitzers, which are advanced modern versions of older units already fighting in Ukraine.The M109A6 Paladin’s 155mm gun has a maximum firing range of 14,9 miles (24 kilometers) with standard artillery ammunition and 18,6 miles (30 kilometers) with assisted rounds. Some of the US Army M109A6 Paladins were fitted with modification kits to fire M982 Excalibur extended-range precision guided projectiles.Secondary armament consists of a roof-mounted 12.7 mm heavy machine gun. Some vehicles were fitted with 40 mm automatic grenade launcher in place of machine gun.The M109A6 Paladin is supported by the M992 ammunition supply vehicle.
