Land-Based Navy Jammers Moved to NATO’s Eastern Flank

General

The Pentagon just moved six U.S. Navy EA-18G Growlers from VAQ-134 to Germany to deter Russian aggression beyond their invasion of Ukraine. The Grower is a state-of-the-art airborne jamming platform that replaced the venerable EA-6B Prowler in 2006, but unlike the legacy airplane, the Growler has self-protect capability in the form of the AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missile. Each Growler sortie on NATO’s “eastern flank,” as Pentagon spokesman John Kirby labeled it at a recent press conference, adds to the enemy electronic order of battle database, which is both a deterrent to further Russian aggression and a guarantee that NATO would be ready to take out the enemy’s integrated air defenses on Day One if tensions escalated in the near future.
