The Iranian Ambassador to Syria Hussein Akbari just told multiple international news sources that earlier today the Israeli Air Force used F-35s to launch what he described as “six missiles” at the Iranian Embassy in the Mezzeh District of Damascus, killing between 5 and 7 people including Iranian military adviser Gen. Ali Reza Zahdi, who led the elite Revolutionary Guard Quds Force in Lebanon and Syria until 2016. Two police officers who guard the building were wounded according to Akbari. The strike took out the consular building, which includes the ambassador’s residence. The adjacent main embassy building was untouched. If reports of the strike are accurate, the question is whether Israel is trying to draw Iran into the existing conflict more directly and to what end.
