The Genius Design of The Pentagon. The Pentagon has been one of the most secure buildings on Earth for many decades, home to some of the most classified documents in the history of the United States. But how do they manage to keep everything so safe?Prior to the construction of the Pentagon, the United States military had been growing dramatically due to World War I, and even after it ended, it just didn’t stop growing. So instead of continuing to build smaller military office spaces, it was decided that they should have a place to consolidate everything, and thus the Pentagon was crafted. The Pentagon was made in the shape of a pentagon originally because of the geographical region they originally were using; however, even after moving, they kept it in that shape due to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s fondness for it and because of the convenience of travel and also the symbolic meaning that had been placed on it. The building was completed in an incredibly fast 16 months because of the ongoing World War II and the need for the space. In the ’90s, an asbestos outbreak that resulted in renovations, followed by the 9/11 terrorist attacks, resulted in Project Phoenix beginning—a project to rebuild and reinforce the remainder of the building but also to focus on securing the surrounding area in which the building was most vulnerable. These changes made the Pentagon into the near impenetrable fortress it is in the modern day.
