China has been rapidly expanding its capabilities in the Antarctic and has ambitions to become a great polar power. Right now, the US military doesn’t have a branch that’s devoted solely to the poles, but should it? Both the Arctic and Antarctic have long been seen as the global commons and have been respected as such by most countries. China could be changing that, and the US needs to adapt. Joining us on this episode of China Unscripted is Alex Gray, a senior fellow in National Security Affairs at the American Foreign Policy Council. He served on the U.S. National Security Council staff from 2018 to 2021, including as director for Oceania and Indo-Pacific Security.
