Greece’s First FDI HN Frigate Kimon in sea trials

General

The Kimon, the first of the Greek FDI HN multi-mission frigates, has entered its second phase of sea trials off the coast of Brittany, France. Measuring 122 meters and displacing 4,500 tons, the FDI HN is poised to become one of the most capable and technologically advanced surface combatants in its class. Designed for high automation, versatility, and survivability, it integrates cutting-edge naval technologies into a compact, multipurpose platform built to meet modern maritime threats. This second testing phase, lasting three weeks, is part of a multi-stage evaluation process that will culminate in full weapon integration, including MM40 Block 3C anti-ship missiles, ASTER 30 Block 1 surface-to-air missiles, twin torpedo launchers and LIONFISH 20 RWS, by late 2025.Though not yet commissioned, Kimon has already demonstrated impressive performance, reaching speeds over 27 knots and maintaining excellent stability in rough seas. This is attributed to its advanced hull form, stealth architecture, and digital systems. While some subsystems remain to be installed, the ship’s sensors, layout, and automation are already proving their high operational value.Trial activities included live simulations with French Air Force aircraft and surface targets to validate the Thales SEAFIRE radar, electronic warfare suite, and electro-optical sensors. The process is overseen by Hellenic Navy crews, defense contractors, and technical specialists. Data from these trials will directly inform the outfitting and final configuration of sister ships Nearchos and Formion, streamlining their own sea trials.Delivery to the Hellenic Navy is expected in December 2025. Kimon is already outfitted with an expanded weapons loadout, including 16 additional SYLVER A50 VLS cells for ASTER 30, a 21-tube RAM Block 2B CIWS, and SYLENA decoy launching systems. Full integration of these additional systems with the SETIS combat management system will upgrade the frigate to its final “Standard 2” configuration by 2027—solidifying its role as a key asset in Greece’s future naval force.=======
