Defense and Intervention Frigate Ship Brief

General

The Defense and Intervention Frigate (FDI) warship, is a next-generation multi-mission surface combatant developed by Naval Group for the French Navy. Designed with modularity and adaptability in mind, the FDI is equipped with advanced radar, sonar, and electronic warfare systems, making it highly effective in anti-air, anti-submarine, and anti-surface warfare. The FDI is built on a stealthy hull design, incorporating a significant amount of composite materials to reduce radar cross-section and enhance survivability. It is powered by a combined diesel and diesel (CODAD) propulsion system, which provides a top speed of over 27 knots and a range exceeding 5,000 nautical miles. The ship’s combat system is centered around the Thales Sea Fire 500, an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, which provides 360-degree surveillance and target tracking. The FDI is also equipped with the Naval Group’s SETIS combat management system, which integrates all onboard sensors and weapons for optimal engagement of multiple threats. The armament of the FDI includes Aster 15 or 30 surface-to-air missiles for air defense, Exocet MM40 Block 3 anti-ship missiles, MU90 torpedoes for anti-submarine warfare, and a 76mm OTO Melara main gun for surface engagements. The ship is also equipped with a hangar and flight deck capable of supporting a medium-sized helicopter, enhancing its operational flexibility.Overall, the FDI warship represents a leap forward in naval capabilities, offering a versatile and powerful platform for modern naval operations.
