Recently a unique and controversial incident occurred between Australian and Chinese warships in the East China Sea. This incident On November 14 has caused waves amongst western and Chinese military leaders and sadly was also the first that left Australian personnel injured. The acting prime minister, Richard Marles, said the Australian government had expressed “serious concerns” to Chinese officials after HMAS Toowoomba encountered a People’s Liberation Army-Navy destroyer. The HMAS Toowoomba stopped in international waters in Japan’s exclusive economic zone after fishing nets became entangled in its propellers . The naval frigate had been helping to enforce U.N. sanctions in the region. The Australian long-range frigate had communicated its intention to conduct diving operations on normal maritime channels, and using internationally recognised signals. The crew of Toowoomba attempted to warn off the Chinese vesse informing them to not use sonar as divers were in the water, but supposedly Ningbo continued to approach, and “it was detected operating its hull-mounted sonar in a manner that posed a risk to the safety of the Australian divers,” according to the Australian Ministry of Defence. The Nigbo is actually a modified Chinese version of the Russian Sovremenny-class destroyer which is a class of guided-missile destroyers originally built for the Soviet Navy. During its history it has been primarily used by the Russian Navy and expanded with the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy.
