During the early 1950s, global aerospace engineering faced a formidable barrier: understanding aerodynamic behavior beyond the speed of sound. Vintage archival footage in this documentary has been meticulously upscaled and restored, appearing in authentic colorized versions to capture Britain’s boldest supersonic enterprise. The journey began with Frank Whittle’s pioneering gas turbine work, which powered the Gloster Meteor—Britain’s first operational jet fighter and a combat-proven veteran against wartime V-1 flying bombs. As Rolls-Royce advanced jet propulsion with the Avon turbojet, Fairey Aviation transitioned from rugged naval workhorses like the Swordfish and the anti-submarine Gannet to high-speed delta research. Following insights from the smaller Fairey Delta 1, chief designer Charlie Chaplin and his team conceived the Fairey Delta 2 (FD2). Designed strictly as an experimental supersonic research vehicle without weapons or passenger accommodations, the aircraft featured a razor-thin 60-degree swept delta wing, an Avon engine generating over 10,000 pounds of thrust with afterburner, and an innovative 10-degree droop-nose cockpit that provided vital runway visibility during high-angle landings. Chief test pilot Peter Twiss, a decorated Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm veteran, took the controls for the maiden flight on October 6, 1954, at Boscombe Down. Testing pushed the boundaries of early aviation systems. Operating with fully powered hydraulic controls devoid of manual reversion, Twiss encountered a harrowing in-flight emergency on November 17, 1954. An airlock in the fuel lines starved the Avon engine at 30,000 feet. Twiss glided through heavy cloud cover back to Boscombe Down and executed a wheels-up belly landing across the runway and grass at over 200 knots, preserving the priceless airframe. Once repaired, the FD2 routinely exceeded Mach 1 in level flight without afterburner. On March 10, 1956, despite minimal financial support from a skeptical Ministry of Supply, Fairey conducted an official World Air Speed Record attempt along the southern coast of England. Tracked by precision ground cameras, radar, and calibration aircraft, Twiss clocked a verified average speed of 1,132 miles per hour (Mach 1.73), shattering the previous American F-100 Super Sabre record by more than 300 mph. Subsequent low-level supersonic trials at Cazaux provided crucial shockwave data directly influencing Dassault’s Mirage III. The FD2 airframe was later rebuilt by Bristol as the BAC 221, integrating an ogival delta wing to conduct aerodynamic validation for Concorde. Today, the aircraft rests at the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton beside Concorde prototype 002, marking an enduring milestone in supersonic history.
