The Rise and Fall of Lockheed’s Compound Gunship | Rare Footage


The development of rotary-wing aviation reached an extraordinary turning point during the Cold War when Lockheed engineers sought to solve the fundamental aerodynamic limitations of conventional helicopters. The vintage archival footage presented in this documentary has been upscaled and restored, appearing in authentic colorized versions to document the development of the rigid rotor and compound propulsion. The story originated in the late 1950s with a radio-controlled concept model that eliminated traditional flapping and lead-lag hinges, affixing rotor blades rigidly to the hub using an independent control gyro. This design proved extraordinarily stable, leading directly to the full-scale CL-475 and the turbine-powered XH-51 research helicopter, which demonstrated zero-gravity maneuverability and unprecedented center-of-gravity tolerances. Lockheed expanded the concept with the Model 286, performing certified aerobatic loops and rolls, before turning to high-speed compound configurations. By mounting stub wings and a Pratt & Whitney J60 turbojet to the XH-51 airframe, engineers relieved the main rotor of lift duties at high velocities, overcoming retreating blade stall and reaching an unofficial record speed of 303 miles per hour. This flight research directly informed Lockheed’s winning submission for the US Army Advanced Aerial Fire Support System (AAFSS): the AH-56 Cheyenne. The AH-56 combined a massive rigid rotor, stub wings, and a rear-mounted variable-pitch pusher propeller driven by a single turbine drivetrain. This compound design enabled horizontal speeds exceeding 230 miles per hour, rapid deceleration into terrain masking, and high-energy autorotation recovery. Integrated with an automated fire control suite, swiveling gunner station, and heavy ordnance capability, the Cheyenne was ordered into series production. However, a tragic prototype crash caused by a high-speed aerodynamic phenomenon known as the half-P hop led to contract cancellation. Although Lockheed redesigned the control gyro and proved the aircraft’s exceptional combat agility at Yuma Proving Grounds, shifting doctrine and inter-service disputes brought the program to an end. This comprehensive retrospective explores the engineering triumphs that directly influenced modern attack aviation.
