NATO just selected the Saab GlobalEye, a Swedish radar suite on a Canadian Bombardier airframe, to replace the aging American E-3 Sentry AWACS fleet, the aircraft I spent years working on as an Air Force radar tech, in the alliance’s most consequential airborne surveillance decision since the Cold War. Eleven nations signed on at the Ankara summit, on the same week Washington was publicly demanding Europe buy American, after the US cancelled its own E-7A Wedgetail replacement and walked away from the NATO version.
