USS Makin Island (LHD 8) Departs San Diego on Deployment

USS Makin Island (LHD 8) Departs San Diego on Deployment Watch the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) depart San Diego Bay for deployment. The Makin Island is a true multi-tool of the Navy, designed to field an integrated amphibious force. She can launch air-cushion landing craft (LCACs) from her well deck and deploy Marine Expeditionary forces using F-35B Lightning II fighter jets, MV-22 Ospreys, and heavy-lift helicopters from her massive flight deck. Fun Fact for the Chat: Commissioned in 2009, the USS Makin Island was the first U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship equipped with a hybrid-electric propulsion system. This advanced "green" design allows her to run on electric power at lower speeds, saving millions of gallons of fuel and earning her the nickname "the Prius of the Fleet!"
