Work is well underway on the US Navy’s next-generation of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines – the Columbia class. Construction of the first boat is well advanced, with 12 on order and two others also in production. They are the largest of their kind ever constructed for the US Navy, together fielding 70% of America’s nuclear arsenal once they are fully operational.
