The PLL-09 is China’s 122mm wheeled self-propelled howitzer, combining a fully enclosed artillery turret with the fast and amphibious Type 08 8×8 armoured vehicle chassis. Designed to support the People’s Liberation Army’s medium combined-arms brigades, the PLL-09 can travel at high road speeds, cross suitable water obstacles and deliver rapid indirect fire before moving to avoid counter-battery attacks. In this video, we examine the PLL-09’s development, 122mm weapon, ammunition, protection, mobility and battlefield role. We also compare it with China’s PCL-09 truck-mounted howitzer, the tracked PLZ-07 and the larger 155mm artillery systems now entering wider service. The PLL-09 may lack the extreme range of the newest artillery platforms, but it remains an important example of how China has built mobile fire support around an entire family of wheeled combat vehicles.
