Sixty airmen. One aircraft built for the day nobody wants to come. It's called the E-4B, and most people know it by a darker name: the Doomsday Plane. It's a flying command post kept on alert and ready to launch. Somewhere on board, a crew has to eat, sleep and keep working, and they don't know when the alert will end or whether it'll turn real. The easy answer is that it's just another plane, one more jet parked on a ramp waiting for orders. That isn't what happened. An alert doesn't stop for meals, for sleep or for the ordinary needs of the people standing it. Same aircraft. Same crew. Hours that won't wait for anyone.
