Has the West Underestimated Chinese Submarines?

For decades, Western naval analysts dismissed China's submarine fleet as loud, outdated, and easily trackable. Early nuclear submarines like the Type 091 and Type 092 suffered from high levels of noise, mechanical problems, and reactor instability, cementing a persistent belief in Western undersea supremacy. While military observers focused on these historical shortcomings, the People’s Liberation Army Navy quietly shifted strategy toward conventional air-independent propulsion submarine designs. Modern diesel-electric vessels like the Yuan class Type 039A/B/C introduced Stirling engines, flank array sonars, possible lithium-ion battery integration, and active sonar-evading angled sails, demonstrating remarkable stealth in contested littoral waters. Simultaneously, China transformed its nuclear submarine capabilities at the expanded Bohai Shipyard in Huludao. Modern nuclear attack submarines, including the Type 093B and the newly revealed Type 095, feature advanced pump-jet propulsors, natural circulation reactors, and vertical launch system cells for long-range anti-ship cruise missiles. Strategic nuclear deterrence has similarly evolved with the Type 094 and upcoming Type 096 carrying JL-3 intercontinental ballistic missiles. Paired with experimental sailless hull designs and uncrewed underwater vehicles, the rapid pace of Chinese naval shipbuilding has effectively closed the acoustic gap and altered the undersea balance of power.
