E-130J Phoenix II: America’s New Nuclear Command Aircraft – The E-130J Phoenix II is America’s next-generation aircraft for the TACAMO mission, designed to keep nuclear command communications connected to U.S. ballistic-missile submarines operating underwater. Based on the C-130J-30 Super Hercules, the aircraft will use very-low-frequency (VLF) radio and a long trailing-wire antenna to transmit critical messages to submerged submarines. But the first airframe is only the beginning, with extensive modifications, testing, and software development still required before it becomes operational.
