Chi Yang Frigates: Taiwan’s Maritime Backbone

General

The Chi Yang-class frigate is a class of guided missile frigates operated by the Republic of China Navy (Taiwan), originally built as the U.S. Navy’s Knox-class frigates. These ships, transferred to Taiwan in the 1990s, were modernized and refitted to enhance anti-submarine warfare (ASW), surface combat capabilities, and air defense. Typically armed with anti-ship missiles, ASROC anti-submarine rockets, torpedoes, a 5-inch main gun, and equipped with advanced sonar and radar systems, Chi Yang-class frigates play a critical role in Taiwan’s maritime defense strategy, particularly in securing territorial waters against potential submarine threats and surface incursions.
