The Canberra class landing helicopter dock is the Royal Australian Navy’s primary instrument of amphibious power projection. The HMAS Canberra and HMAS Adelaide are based on the Spanish Juan Carlos I LHD design. At 27,500 tonnes, they are the largest warships ever operated by Australia. Their primary combat power lies in their amphibious warfare capability to send dozens of fighting vehicles and over a thousand marines directly from ship to shore. Naval aviation capacity is fulfilled by a large flight deck with several marked helicopter positions. However, the most distinctive feature is the ski-jump ramp at the bow, which remains unused.
