Yemeni refugees crossing Bab el-Manbeb Strait to flee fighting arriving in Djibouiti

More than 2,000 Yemeni refugees crossed the Bab el-Manbeb Strait and arrived in Djibouiti, in order to flee the fighting in Yemen, the International Organization for Migration said Monday. According to Associated Press the agency also reported that nearly 94,000 people have fled their homes in Yemen since fighting between Houthi rebels and government forces escalated this month. The worst hit areas are Taiz and Lahj governorates, where more than 48,000 have been displaced by the fighting, IOM officials said. The UN migration agency has called for urgent support to meet shelter, water and sanitation needs for those displaced. In footage provided by the agency, UN staff were helping families arriving in small boats to shore, later distributing food and shelter. Women and children took cover from scorching sun under canopies set up on the shoreline. Yemen is inching closer to a return to a civil war that killed 150,000 before a 2022 ceasefire. Fighting is intensifying between the Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who have made strategic gains that threaten a crucial Red Sea shipping route, and the forces of the internationally recognized government.
