President Trump is urging Ukraine to stop attacking Russian refineries while Russian missiles and drones continue to hit Ukrainian cities. Why is Washington applying pressure this way?
In this video, I look at the Trump administration’s likely reasoning through the lens of the 2025 National Security Strategy: ending the war quickly, reducing the risk of escalation, easing pressure on energy markets, and shifting more of Europe’s defense burden to Europe. That helps explain the policy. It doesn’t make it fair, or guarantee that restraining Ukraine will bring Russia to the negotiating table.
The real test is whether Washington seeks verifiable restraint from both sides, or continues pressing the side it has more leverage over.
