The Four Types of Armies:

Saudi Arabia has spent billions building one of the best-equipped militaries in the Middle East. But buying advanced tanks, aircraft and missiles isn’t the same as building an army capable of fighting as a unified force.

In this video, I explain how Saudi Arabia’s armed forces developed as a “palace guard army,” why divided commands, centralized decision-making, contractor dependence and weak junior leadership became serious problems during the war in Yemen—and what the Saudis can do about it.

The solution isn’t another tank. Saudi Arabia needs realistic combat training, a professional NCO corps, a permanent joint command, honest readiness measurements, organic counter-drone capabilities and infantry trained for the mountains along its southern border.

Saudi Arabia has purchased most of the components of a first-rate army. Now it has to build the institution that makes those components work together.
