The U.S. Navy has announced that the W93/Mk7 program had passed Milestone B and entered the Engineering and Manufacturing Development phase, marking a major transition from concept development toward detailed production design and manufacturing qualification.
W93 is the warhead whereas Mk7 is the reentry vehicle and both are being developed as part of the program , so that they work together.
National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) had reported that the W93 entered the feasibility-study and design-options phase in May 2022.
During the Engineering and Manufacturing Development phase engineers are expected to complete the production design and demonstrate that the system can be manufactured in the quantities required by the Navy.
Commenting on its development, director of Strategic Systems Programs Vice Admiral Douglas Williams observed: “W93/Mk7 will provide flexibility and adaptability to meet future Warfighter needs and ensure an uninterrupted at sea deterrent for the sea-based leg of the nuclear triad.”
He further stated that the program was working at “hyper-speed.”
