US Navy’s “Dead” $955 Million Railgun Just Fired Again!


In 2021, the American railgun looked practically dead. The U.S. Navy had spent more than 15 years and $955 million on it, learned to accelerate projectiles to hypersonic speeds, built 32-megajoule systems—and then stopped requesting funding for it. The railgun did not lose to physics—it worked. It lost to barrel wear, monstrous power requirements, integration difficulties, and the higher-priority race for hypersonic missiles. It seemed that the gun’s story had ended there. But General Atomics did not agree. The technology that had once been written off remained relevant—only now for a completely different kind of war. And that war is already underway!
