The U.S. Navy had spent more than 15 years and $955 million on it, learned to accelerate projectiles to hypersonic speeds, built 32-megajoule systems—and then stopped requesting funding for it. The railgun did not lose to physics—it worked. It lost to barrel wear, monstrous power requirements, integration difficulties, and the higher-priority race for hypersonic missiles.
