Ukraine brings 270 people back from Russian captivity, including nine civilians

Ukraine has brought home 270 people in a prisoner exchange with Russia, including national guard members, border guards and other military personnel, as well as nine civilians, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Those released include fighters from the Azov unit, territorial defense forces, the navy, ground forces, air assault forces and the state special transport service. Most had been held in Russian captivity since 2022. The majority of those returning home defended the Ukrainian city of Mariupol. Others fought on the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Kyiv, Mykolaiv and Chernihiv fronts. Zelenskyy said many of the released Ukrainians had been illegally convicted in Russia. The group also includes five people previously believed to have been killed in the July 2022 attack on the Olenivka prison. “We remember every single person and continue searching for everyone,” Zelenskyy said, thanking all those involved in securing prisoner exchanges. He also expressed gratitude to Ukrainian troops fighting on the front lines, saying their efforts help the country bring its people home.
