What happens when military ships have to fight their way through some of the thickest and most unforgiving ice on Earth? In this video, we count down the Top 10 Military Ships Built to Fight Through Extreme Ice, from powerful Arctic patrol vessels and specialized Antarctic support ships to some of the largest nuclear-powered icebreakers ever built. These vessels are engineered to smash through frozen seas, operate in extreme polar conditions, support military and scientific missions, escort ships through dangerous ice, and keep vital Arctic and Antarctic routes open. From Norway's KV Svalbard and Russia's Ilya Muromets to Canada's HMCS Harry DeWolf, Japan's Shirase, Russia's massive Project 22220 Arktika, and America's legendary USCGC Polar Star, each ship represents a different approach to surviving and operating in extreme ice. We will look at their icebreaking capability, size, propulsion, endurance, military role, and the incredible engineering that allows them to operate where ordinary ships would be completely trapped. Some rely on reinforced hulls and powerful diesel-electric engines, while others use enormous propulsion systems or even nuclear power to push through meters of solid sea ice. These are not simply ships that can survive frozen waters—they are specialized machines built to conquer them. Watch until the end to see which vessel takes the number one spot among the Top 10 Military Ships Built to Fight Through Extreme Ice.
