Quantum Systems has fitted its Vector reconnaissance drone with synthetic aperture radar (SAR), a sensor that can see through fog, clouds, smoke, and darkness; and Germany's Bundeswehr is confirmed to receive it this year. I explain how SAR actually works, why bad weather has become one of the only remaining ways Russian forces can move undetected in Ukraine, and lay out the real, but still unconfirmed, case for why Ukraine may be next in line for this upgrade.
To be clear, Ukraine probably doesn't have this SAR-upgraded Vector recon drone yet… but I'm hopeful for the future. When I reached out to Quantum for this video, they would neither confirm nor deny.
