Why did Britain build three different nuclear bombers at the same time?
The Vickers Valiant, Avro Vulcan, and Handley Page Victor were more than aircraft. They were Britain’s attempt to deter the Soviet Union, protect itself from American isolationism, and remain a country Washington had to take seriously.
In this video, I explain why Britain developed the V-bomber force, how each aircraft solved a different engineering problem, and why the bomber was only the visible part of a much larger nuclear system. That system included thermonuclear weapons, aerial refueling, electronic warfare, analog navigation computers, dispersed airfields, Quick Reaction Alert crews, and target plans for a war everyone hoped would never happen.
We’ll also examine Blue Steel, Project E, the Skybolt crisis, the shift from high-altitude to low-level penetration, and why the Polaris submarine ultimately replaced Britain’s nuclear bomber force.
