The Truth About the Army’s “Canceled” Drone Unit

The Army is phasing out an experimental drone, 3rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, and converting them back to their infantry role unit just as Ukrainian forces are demonstrating how vulnerable American formations can be to drones. So, is Gen. Christopher LaNeve ignoring the lessons of Ukraine, or has the Army already absorbed them? In this video, I examine the Wall Street Journal’s reporting, the results of Combined Resolve and Exercise Hedgehog 25, and the Army’s shift toward multipurpose companies, autonomous systems, electronic warfare and distributed drone capabilities. I also explain why copying Ukraine’s style of warfare could prepare the United States for the wrong conflict. Eliminating a specialized drone battalion is not necessarily the same as eliminating drone warfare. The real question is whether the Army is spreading those capabilities throughout the force—or allowing the lessons to disappear with the unit.
