The Navy Just Commissioned a Warship in Alaska. This Is The Logic Behind It…

The USS Ted Stevens is the U.S. Navy’s newest Arleigh Burke-class Flight III destroyer, bringing a major leap in sensing capability with the AN/SPY-6 radar. The radar uses modular technology and far greater sensitivity than the older SPY-1, allowing the ship to detect and track more threats across a full 360-degree field. But that performance comes with a cost: the new system demands significantly more electrical power and cooling capacity, forcing major changes elsewhere in the ship. Commissioning in Alaska also carries strategic meaning as the Navy pays increasing attention to the Arctic and the changing maritime environment there.
