The Houthis have seized new territory along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, including strategically important positions near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait—one of the most important shipping chokepoints in the world.
But the real danger isn’t necessarily that the Houthis physically close the strait.
They just have to make shipping companies and insurance providers believe that using it is too dangerous.
In this video, I break down how the Houthis were able to advance, why Saudi Arabia has struggled to stop them, and why American airstrikes and targeting support can only accomplish so much without effective forces on the ground.
I also look at why Turkey and Pakistan haven’t jumped into the fight despite their new defense agreement with Saudi Arabia, why Egypt has enormous economic incentives to keep the Red Sea open but still appears reluctant to intervene militarily, and what all of this might tell us about how the United States approaches a future conflict over Taiwan.
