In 1980-81, Israel secretly cooperated with the Islamic Republic of Iran to try and destroy Saddam Hussein’s nuclear reactor, both nations fearing that the Iraqi leader was trying to build an atomic bomb. In 1980, Iranian Phantoms launched Operation Scorch Sword, followed in 1981 by Israeli F-16s and Operation Opera.
