Russia put a jet engine in its Geran-4 attack drone. A cheap interceptor that could catch yesterday’s drone may struggle to catch today’s.
In this video, I explain how the Geran-4 differs from the propeller-driven Geran-2, why speed and altitude complicate interception, and how more resilient navigation can make electronic warfare less effective. I also look at the conflicting performance claims and Ukraine’s development of jet-powered interceptors.
Ukraine can still shoot these drones down. The harder question is whether it can do that repeatedly, across an entire country, without exhausting the weapons it needs for everything else.
An expensive missile can be worth firing to protect a power plant. But you can’t approve a missile into existence five minutes before impact.
