Russia’s Fighter Jets Share One Weak Point. Ukraine Just Hit It

Ukraine just sent drones about 870 miles into Russia and hit the TITANIUM plant in Berezniki, part of VSMPO-AVISMA, the company behind roughly 96% of Russia’s titanium sponge.

That gray, porous lump of metal sits at the start of a supply chain feeding Su-30, Su-34 and Su-35 fighters, Tu-95 and Tu-160 strategic bombers, Kalibr cruise missiles, and the Votkinsk plant that builds Iskander and Yars missiles.

In this video I explain what titanium sponge is and why it’s so hard to make, how one company came to hold almost all of Russia’s production (and once supplied about a third of Boeing’s titanium), and what we actually know about the damage. Russia says it was minor and Ukraine hasn’t shown otherwise, so I also cover why stockpiles, repair times and a possible second strike will decide whether this hit becomes a real bottleneck for Russia’s war machine.
