Eleven people were killed after an avalanche struck a group of climbers in Russia's North Caucasus region of Kabardino-Balkaria, the local emergency ministry said. According to Associated Press the avalanche swept down a slope in the Bezengi Gorge on Sunday, hitting a group of 33 climbers who were hiking in the area. According to the regional Emergency Situations Ministry, 10 people made their way down on their own, while six injured climbers were evacuated by rescuers. The fate of six other climbers remains unknown. Search and rescue operations are continuing, the ministry said. The injured climbers were transported to Nalchik, the regional capital, for medical treatment.
