Resistance drones strike: Myanmar regime vessels destroyed in fierce river battle

Five vessels operated by Myanmar’s military regime, including two gunboats, were destroyed during fighting in Shwegu Township, Kachin State, on Wednesday, according to local reports. Two of the vessels were struck by resistance drones while docked in Shwegu town. The vessels were carrying ammunition upstream toward Bhamo, where regime forces have been facing mounting pressure from resistance groups. The remaining three vessels – two gunboats and a barge – were attacked while returning from Bhamo after an earlier resupply operation. Resistance forces said the vessels were set ablaze and sunk. Aerial footage released by the resistance purportedly shows the barge erupting in a large explosion as it traveled under the escort of the two gunboats. The attacks come amid months of heavy fighting in Katha and Shwegu townships along the Mandalay-Kachin border. The military has been attempting to maintain control of the Irrawaddy River, which serves as its main remaining supply route to regime positions in and around the besieged city of Bhamo.
