We started with stunning training missions featuring Rockwell B-1B Lancers and Boeing B-52H Stratofortress’s taking off in glorious sunshine. A major highlight was the rare arrival of a particular Lockheed U-2S Dragon Lady (801099 not seen over this side of the Atlantic for quite some time), flying all the way from Beale AFB, USA—an amazing sight to catch up close! The afternoon brought excitement and tension: during a pair of B-1B Lancer missions, one aircraft suffered an engine failure/compressor stall mid run-up, leading to an aborted takeoff. It was a dramatic moment to witness with a large flash of flame!!. We wrapped up the day with the safe return of the two B-52Hs from their sortie, bringing a perfect end to a memorable day at RAF Fairford.
