Does America have too many generals and admirals? Before we start cutting stars, we should probably find out what the people wearing them actually do.

America once had a general running the organization that sells socks at the Post Exchange. That job went to a civilian retail executive. Could other military leadership positions benefit from the same scrutiny?

In this video, I explain general and admiral ranks, why comparisons with World War II can be misleading, and the difference between commanding troops, planning operations, and managing support organizations. We also examine civilian leadership at AAFES and Army CID—and why replacing a general doesn’t automatically mean saving money.

Some positions may justify their stars. Others deserve a harder look. The evidence requires more than counting officers and picking a percentage to cut.
