For thirty years, Northern Ireland endured bombings, assassinations, military occupation and sectarian reprisals. But the roots of the Troubles stretch back centuries: from the Plantation of Ulster and the partition of Ireland to Bloody Sunday, British internment, Libyan weapons shipments and American support for the IRA.
In this video, I explain how peaceful civil-rights activism descended into guerrilla warfare, why Sinn Féin pursued an “Armalite and ballot box” strategy, and how the Good Friday Agreement finally ended the bloodshed. I also examine the conflict through my own family’s history as Ulster Protestants who left Northern Ireland behind.
