You don’t need to own cryptocurrency to care about the $6.3 billion Binance hack. The FBI attributes the theft to North Korea—and stolen cryptocurrency helps finance a weapons program that reaches well beyond the people holding the tokens.

I explain what Binance has disclosed, how attackers can potentially move money without stealing private keys, and why a compromised employee computer can become a national-security problem.

There’s also a difference between replacing stolen money and recovering it. If your insurance company replaces your stolen television, the burglar may still have the first television.

We’ll walk through hot wallets, the FBI’s TraderTraitor attribution, efforts to freeze stolen assets, and what this incident teaches us about trusting the systems that hold our money.

The technical investigation is ongoing. Preliminary company statements are identified as such, and this video does not claim that a particular missile was purchased with proceeds from this theft.
