NATO fighter jets took to the skies over Lithuania on September 30 as allied air forces showcased their growing presence on the alliance’s Eastern Flank. Spanish, Italian and Turkish aircraft are deployed at Siauliai Air Base as part of NATO’s collective defence mission. The deployment was upgraded from air policing to air defence in July following repeated Russian and Ukrainian drone incursions. The Baltic mission has operated since 2004, protecting Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, which do not maintain their own fighter fleets.
