After nearly 14 years of development, Israel's sixth and most advanced submarine, INS Drakon, has arrived at Haifa naval base following a 24-day voyage from Germany. Weighing 3,000 tons and costing around €500 million, the submarine features air-independent propulsion for extended underwater endurance and is reportedly capable of launching cruise missiles with a range of roughly 2,000 kilometers. Navy officials say Drakon strengthens Israel's ability to operate covertly in distant waters amid rising maritime threats — from Houthi attacks near Bab el-Mandeb to Iranian activity in the Strait of Hormuz, and growing concern over Turkey's expanding naval power. The sub is expected to become fully operational within two months, with Israeli officials also eyeing a seventh and eighth submarine to replace its aging Dolphin-class fleet.
